10 Things Your Mother Never Told You about Dating Sites

Today's guest post is from Tiersa Buckley a writer for datingsite.org who writes about the ins and outs of dating and its sometimes humorous pitfalls. In this post she shares a few tips about dating sites that you may not have known. I myself found them to be pretty insightful and I hope you will too. You should definitely check them out over there at datingsite.org There are a few dating site reviews and some pretty interesting stuff related to dating and relationships that I'm certain you will find helpful.

We all know that signing up and creating a dating profile can be intimidating, but there may be some things your mother left out when introducing you to the wonderful world of cyberspace dating.  You may have to sit through a slew of chat sessions and weird email exchanges before you get to prince charming. Let’s face it; there are a lot of quirky green frogs just waiting to be sent a “flirt” or a “wink”.  It’s much like weeding through a store to find your perfect pair of blue jeans that fit just right with no apparent flaws or ones that are being held together by a thread or patch.  If you’ve never experienced internet dating, they’re a few things you should know before you go off to the World Wide Web in search of romance.

  1. First, make sure you know if certain dating sites offer a satisfaction guarantee; just in case you have not received potential matches or are not happy with their services.   Some sites do not allow members to cancel simply because they are not satisfied with the amount of frogs in the pond.

  1. Keep an eye on well-timed messages as they might not be real.  Sometimes certain dating sites will create enticing fake messages for members who are trying to cancel their account.  These are created as a way to keep the members on the hook for renewing their membership fees.   Dating sites that seem to send fake e-mails as a ruse or way to lure members back should be avoided.

  1. Make a commitment to protecting your privacy by creating iron clad passwords with up to at least 8 characters including numbers, letters and symbols.  Always close out your browser when exiting your profile.  This is particularly true when using an unsecured WiFi connection or public computer.   Block unwanted ad targeted technology and tracking by adjusting your computers alert settings.  Some dating sites track internet activity to their site as a way to market users with targeted ads at a later date.

  1. Do not communicate away from the dating site, unless it’s to meet in a public place or you have already established a trusted relationship with another member. If someone contacts you and says that there are better dating site. This should be considered suspicious activity and raise a red flag.  Dating scams are a dime a dozen and a large number of people have fallen for this tactic.  These are people who want to lure members to other non-scrupulous sites so that they can commit fraud away from mainstream dating sites that employ IT technology and monitor users closely.

  1. Avoid dating sites that allow members to send group e-mails or photo blasters.  Love does not always come wrapped in six pack abs and a killer smile and e-mails like this come off as pushy and overbearing.

  1. Try and stick to paid membership sites as these dating sites have the highest quality of members and features.  If you’re willing to find that special person, then you should be willing to pay for it.  Relying on free dating services will leave you at the mercy of users who may not share the same intentions as you do.

  1. Poor website design could be a clue that it may not be a good dating site.  Design and content of the site are just about as important as the quality of its members.  It gives the appearance that the dating site is not invested or is not serious about matching people and is just out to make a quick buck.

  1. Be mindful of dating site reviews before choosing a prospective site.  User reviews are valuable in helping you make the best decision when looking for your life partner.

  1. Check the dating sites traffic ranking.  The true measure of a good dating site is their monthly web visitor traffic and how many members are logging on to set up profiles.  Visit Compete.com for statistical information to get a rough idea of the true number of their so called member database.

10. Utilize coupons and sales to your advantage.  Look for special sign up times that include promo codes for a percentage off of a membership package.  From time to time, dating sites offer free communication deals and options for extending your membership value.

This blog post is a wake up call for those who are very lenient online. Since many are now joining these online dating sites like Alt Com, Plenty of Fish, etc., users should be smart and alert. We should know our responsibilities online and that includes protecting ourselves.
